About Us

New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants (NMOHC) is an independent, physician-owned practice founded by Barbara McAneny and Clark Haskins that has been serving New Mexico for 36 years. The entire team works hard each day to provide patient-centered care that keeps patients healthier, happier, and out of the hospital – all at a lower cost than other facilities. NMOHC has 273 employees, 252 in Albuquerque and 21 in Gallup. Physicians from Albuquerque drive to Gallup each week to provide care to the local community and have done so regularly since that clinic opened in 2007. In 2022 there were a total of 110,961 patient visits, 98,294 in Albuquerque and 12,667 in Gallup.
Everything about NMOHC is different. When the current building in Albuquerque was constructed in 2001, one of the primary design goals was to surround patients and staff with beauty and light. The center was constructed as a living art gallery as well as a medical facility, filled with stunning, high-quality art, many created by local artists, with new exhibits every three months. The artwork is available for sale a portion of the proceeds benefit the New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation for our NMOHC patients. The Gallup clinic also doubles as a gallery space, displaying works of art created by area artists. The Center has been blessed by a Navajo medicine man, and features an on-site hogan for use by patients, and is open to members of the community.
As part of its mission to provide everything patients need – the community Board led New Mexico Cancer Center Foundation was established in 2002 to help patients with the non-medical costs of having cancer. Since 2002, the Foundation has distributed over $1.1 million to help patients with the non-medical needs they struggle with due to the cost of cancer treatment, including keeping food on their table, gas in their car and a roof over their heads, with over $200,000 of that just since the beginning of COVID due to the significant impact the pandemic has had on the community.
COME HOME, Community Oncology Medical Home, was a 19.8M$ grant received by Dr. McAneny in 2012 to develop the processes used at NMOHC to decrease hospitalizations into a scalable model and demonstrate that other groups could achieve the same outcomes in terms of improved quality and decreased costs. We effectively implemented this as a successful project. Dr. McAneny created computerized Triage Pathways as decision support for triage nurses which we are still using today. Our hospitalization rate is still two thirds of the national average for cancer patients.
