The Martinsburg VA Medical Center seeks an Ophthalmologist with training in Medical Retina. The candidate must be Board Eligible or Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

  • The individual is responsible for the maintenance of the highest standards of professional care in the outpatient and inpatient management of ophthalmology patients served by the facility. Managing outpatient, inpatient, and operative ophthalmology cases.
  • Provide immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur.
  • Provide professional advice to medical staff upon request, in emergencies, about professional management of patients being treated for ophthalmic diseases and injuries.
  • Perform diabetic tele-retinal readings as needed.
  • Provide professional services requiring a full range of inpatient and outpatient ophthalmology retinal services and comprehensive ophthalmology consistent with the hospital's capabilities.
  • Facilitates patient access to medical care by recommending appropriate referrals to other health care providers by applicable policies and regulations.
  • Maintains current educational requirements as requested by the Medical Center.
  • Proficiency in the diagnosis of surgical retina diseases.
  • Proficiency in the diagnosis and treatment of non-surgical retinal diseases.
  • Emphasis will be placed on age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, inflammatory diseases, and inherited retinal degenerations.
  • Proficiency in multiple types of in-office procedures such as intraocular injections, and retinal lasers.
  • Competency in the use and interpretation of fluorescein and ICG angiography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), ultrasonography, and visual function tests.
  • Responsible for the education of residents, technicians, and other physicians.

The weekly schedule is Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The call is very little to none with an occasional consultative phone call.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). FERS is a three-tiered retirement plan composed of 1) Social Security benefits, 2) FERS-RAE basic benefits (pension), and 3) Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) which is a 401K-type plan
  • How is the pension funded? VA employees automatically contribute 4.4% of their salary each pay period and the VA contributes 8.3% of the employees salary each pay period for a total annual contribution percentage equal to 12.7% of the employees salary
  • Similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector, the TSP allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service. For calendar year 2020, employees under the age of 50 may contribute up to $19,500, while those over age 50 are eligible to make catch-up contributions that allow them to defer up to $25,500.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions , depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
